A Teenage Girl Diagnoses Herself After Her Doctors Miss Her Disease
Bay Area News reported a story about a teen girl who outsmarted her doctors by correctly diagnosing herself with Crohn’s disease, after her doctors missed it and said that she had irritable bowel syndrome.
Apparently she was taking a Biomedical Problems class and pathologists came to the class to teach the students how to correctly diagnose slides. Later she took slides of her own intestinal tissue to the class. Looking at one of the slides, she thought she found something and called over her teacher. The teacher snapped a picture of the slide and sent it to a pathologist. The pathologist confirmed that it was a granuloma.
What this story reminds me of (spiritual parallels):
This teenager felt in her gut that something was wrong, even though her doctors told her that nothing was seriously wrong. Have you ever known something was wrong with you, only to be told by everyone that you are just fine? In the spiritual world I see this all the time. On Yahoo Answers I saw someone posted a question stating that he was losing his faith in God and he asked what he should do. He received a flood of answers telling him things such as, “Good, keep at it”, or “Do what you want to do”, and “Always think for yourself, you will end up at the answer that works best for you.” Other responses congratulated this person for having doubts, stating that it was the best thing for him. This person obviously recognized that there was a problem, yet he was told that everything was fine, even great.
I hear similar conversations all the time. Someone will say something such as, “Am I bad because I did xyz?” The listeners will usually pause and then try to justify what the person did, so that the person feels better about herself/himself. Which is better…..telling someone the truth out of love or wanting to protect their feelings by lying and letting the person think they did the right thing?
The world will diagnose your problem as having a low self esteem or not loving yourself enough. The bible will diagnose your problem as having a problem with sin.
The world will say that you should put yourself first. The bible will tell you to put others above yourself.
The world will tell you that you have control over your own life and that you are the master of your own destiny. The bible will tell you that God is in control and you need to place your faith in Him.
The world will tell you to do introspection into your life so that you can “find yourself”. The bible will tell you to find Christ and to examine yourself to see if you are truly saved.
The world will lead you to worry about things and possessions. The bible will tell you to place all of your worries in the hands of God.
