8 Reasons to Read the Bible
1. The Bible Offers a Powerful Message of Redemption
The message in the bible from the beginning in Genesis to the end in Revelation shows the heart of man, the character of God, and man’s need for salvation. Jesus Christ, the Messiah, is at the heart of the gospels and the bible clearly says that Jesus is the only way to the Father. When you learn the story of redemption you will be amazed at what Jesus did for you. To find out exactly what He did for you, check out The Heart of the Gospel.
2. The Bible is Inspired By God
2 Timothy 3:16 “All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”
Just as an athlete trains for a sports event, the Christian trains and becomes equipped for the events of daily life by reading the bible. Scripture was written by men, through the inspiration of God.
3. The Bible is Alive and Powerful
What does it mean to be alive and powerful? Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” The bible exposes our innermost thoughts, desires, and intentions. It reveals our sin and leads us to Christ. The bible shows us who we are, what our future holds, and which path to walk in.
4. Read to Find Out if What You’ve Heard is True
Many people will tell you a lot of different things about the bible. Don’t take anyone’s word for it until you have searched the scriptures for yourself. Acts 17:11 states, “Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” The Bereans were open to what Paul said, but they didn’t blindly believe everything he said. They searched the scripture for themselves and they were recorded as “noble” for doing this.
5. The Bible Lights Our Way
Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy Word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.” Just like you need a light in order to see where you are going in the darkness, you need the word to show you the way. If you don’t know where to start, begin with a daily bible reading schedule.
6. The Bible Will Make You Wise
Psalm 19:7 “The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.”
Psalm 119:99 “I have more insight than all my teachers, for Thy testimonies are my meditation.” Wisdom is gained when you read God’s word and meditate on it. Meditate means to think, ponder, and reflect.
7. The Bible Points Out Our Sin
Romans 3:20 “because by the works of the Law, no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.” You may be wondering, “Why would I want to become more aware of my sin?” The solution can’t be found unless the problem is addressed. Read The Path of Salvation to more fully understand the problem and solution.
8. The Bible is a Tutor That Leads Us to Christ
Galatians 3:24 “Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, that we may be justified by faith”. Galatians 3:10 says, “For as many as are of the woks of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, to perform them.” The law points out our sin and shows us that we have a problem. But the good news is that once we are aware of the problem, there is a solution waiting for us. Christ died for us, freeing us from the curse if we believe in Him. The law is like a tutor pointing us in the right direction….pointing us toward Jesus Christ. Read the Old Testament Law is our Tutor.
