Are You Walking Towards or Away From Jesus?
Who do you say Jesus is? Is He a liar, a lunatic, or was He God? This is a question that has eternal significance. In Matthew 16 Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
Jesus asked again, “But what about you?” “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Author and theologian C.W. Lewis wrote, “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” (C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, The MacMillan Company, 1960, pp. 40-41.)
So to say that Jesus was a great moral teacher just doesn’t cut it. He was either much more than that or He was a madman. What did others say about Him?
John the Baptist said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:28-29)
Simon Peter’s brother, Andrew said that they had found the Messiah (John 1:40-41 ) while Nathanial called Him the King of Israel (John 1:49).
Did anyone not believe in his deity? The religious leaders of the day couldn’t stand Him because He was taking away the attention they normally received. Matthew 12:14 says, “But the Pharisees went out and conspired against Him, as to how they might destroy Him.”
But Jesus was not intimidated by them. He called them a brood of vipers to their face. He even called them white washed tombs with dead man’s bones inside. He hated their corruption and hypocrisy.
He claimed deity by using a name that God alone used. He knew that there would be a response to this but He didn’t back down.
He testified that He existed before Abraham and He used a name referred to God the Father, “I AM” . John 8:58,59, “Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am’. Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.”
He also said that He had the authority to forgive sins
Matthew 9:6, “But in order that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins:–then He said to the paralytic–”Rise, take up your bed, and go home”.
Last of all, He claimed to be the only way. John 14: 6, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”
So my question for you is, “Do you believe the testimonies of Jesus’s disciples; that he was the Messiah, the lamb of God, and the Son of the living God? This is one of the greatest questions you will ever answer and your answer will impact your life forever.
Before you answer, consider this. Jesus said that He existed before the world was created. John 17:5, “And now, glorify Thou Me together with Thyself, Father, with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was.”
Right now are you walking away from Jesus or are you walking towards Him?
