Prophesies About the Messiah
What is a prophesy? A prophesy is a declaration that something will happen in the future, before it happens. The Old Testament is full of prophesies, especially foretelling of a coming Messiah. Messiah means “anointed” or “anointed one”. The Greek equivalent is Khristos or Christ. The Jews were waiting for a coming Messiah, a deliverer, an anointed one to save them. Many Jews hoped in a future Messiah to help them when Rome took Israel captive. Those that knew their Old Testament scripture knew that there would be signs.
In his book, Science Speaks, Peter Stoner took just 8 of the many old testament messianic prophesies and calculated the mathematical odds of all of them being fulfilled. The calculation came to 100,000,000,000,000,000.
Stoner gave this illustration in his book:
If you mark one of ten tickets, and place all the tickets in a hat, and thoroughly stir them, and then ask a blindfolded man to draw one, his chance of getting the right ticket is one in ten. Suppose that we take 10^17 silver dollars and lay them on the face of Texas. They’ll cover all of the state two feet deep. Now mark one of these silver dollars and stir the whole mass thoroughly, all over the state. Blindfold a man and tell him that he can travel as far as he wishes, but he must pick up one silver dollar and say that this is the right one. What chance would he have of getting the right one? Just the same chance that the prophets would’ve had of writing these eight prophecies and having them all come true in any one man, from their day to the present time, providing they wrote them in their own wisdom. 8 messianic prophecies that Jesus fulfilled
1. The bible prophesied of a child who would be ruler from the line of David. This would not be an ordinary man, as the child has the names of God.
Isaiah 9:6 “For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness. From then on and forevermore, the zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.”
In Luke 1:26-33 an angel tells Mary, the mother of Jesus, that she will bear a son and vs.32,33 “He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and His kingdom will have no end.”
2. The Messiah Will Come From the Lineage of Jesse
Isaiah 11:1 “Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.”
Luke 3:23 “And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli”. (beginning of lineage)
Luke 3:32 “Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson,” (lineage including Jesse)
3. It prophesied that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem
Micah 5:2, “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity.
This verse states that 1) a ruler will come from Bethlehem 2)will be from the clans of Judah to be a ruler 3)will be someone who lived long ago, from the days of eternity (inferring that this person is not a regular man)
Matthew 2:1 “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem…”
Matthew 1:1-17 shows the genealogy of Jesus which includes Judah.
4. The bible predicts that money would be thrown to the Potter’s Field (money taken as a bribe to betray Jesus)
Zechariah 11:13 “Then the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter, that magnificent price at which I was valued by them.” So I took the thirty shekels of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of the Lord.
Matthew 27:3-10 says that Judas threw the pieces of silver he received as a bribe and hung himself. The chief priests used the money to buy the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers.
5. The bible predicted that He would keep silent during oppression
Isaiah 53:7 “He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, and like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, so He did not open His mouth. (matt 26:63)
Matthew 26:63 “But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, ‘I adjure You by the living God, that you tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God’.” This happened during the interrogation leading up to his death.
6. The bible predicts that Jesus would be surrounded by evildoers
Psalm 22:16 “For dogs have surrounded me; a band of evildoers has encompassed me; they pierced my hands and my feet.
Mark 15: 29-31 “And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself and come down from the cross!” In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself.
7. They divided up his clothes among themselves
Psalm 22:18 “They divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
Matthew 27:35 “And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots.”
8. The bible predicts that He would be assigned with the wicked, yet be with a rich man in his death.
Isaiah 53:9 “His grave was assigned with wicked men, yet He was with a rich man in his death. (matt 27:57-60)
Mark 15:27 “And they crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left.”
Mark 15:43 “Joseph of Arimathea coame, a prominent member of the Council, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.
Matthew 27:59-60 “And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away.”
