What is that certificate of debt that the apostle Paul is talking about in Colossians? The debt he is referring to is our sin. What are the decrees against us? The decrees against us come from the law, which point out our sin. The law shows us where we have failed. It shows us where we are weak. It shows us where we have rebelled against God. Romans 5:7-8 says, “For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

It discusses freedom from sin and condemnation, setting the mind on the Spirit, suffering, weakness, being called to God’s overall purpose, justification, and God’s immense love for us. Watch this recitation of Romans 8 by Pastor, John Piper.

The second chapter in John Piper’s book, “Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die”, talks about the fact that Jesus died to please the Father. Yes, he gave his life willingly because of his love for us, but He also submitted to the Father’s desire because of his love for the Father.

Jesus Came to Die to Absorb the Wrath of God

The death of Christ became the payment for our sin. 1 John 4:10 says, “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
