The Power and Authority of Jesus Christ at the Garden of Gethsemane

There are many passages that show the power and authority that Jesus held, but this passage has always left me in awe as I picture the scene.

John 18:4-6
”Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.
“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

This passage never ceases to amaze me every time I read it. To set the scene, Jesus and His disciples were in the Garden of Gethsemane praying. Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to lay down His life and the full weight of it was upon Him. He prayed that the Father would “remove this cup” but then he said, “Not my will but Yours be done”. Jesus is God, yet we sometimes forget His humanity. He was a man and felt the emotions of a man. The bible says He was in agony as He prayed and his sweat became like drops of blood, pouring off of Him. He had separated Himself away from His disciples and He had asked them to pray for Him. When He returned to them He found that they had fallen asleep (Luke 24:41-46). He was alone in this trial.

A group of religious leaders came with a Roman cohort to arrest Jesus with torches and weapons. A Roman cohort was a group of soldiers that could number anywhere from 200-600 men. Jesus asked who they sought and when they replied, “Jesus of Nazareth” he told them, “I am He”. They drew back and fell to the ground. All those soldiers came for one man, and yet they fell to the ground the moment He said who He was. I wonder what was going through their minds at that moment? He could have easily slipped away like He had done many times before when others sought to kill Him. This time He voluntarily went with them because He choose to give up His life for you and I. He knew that the price of our sin had to be paid or we would forever be separated from God. The humble King brought soldiers to the ground because of his power and authority but he willingly offered Himself up to be crucified.
