Jesus Came to Die to Absorb the Wrath of God
In my quest to summarize each chapter in John Piper’s book, “Fifty Reasons Jesus Came to Die”, I will begin with the first chapter, which talks about how Jesus came to absorb the Wrath of God.
John Piper states, “If God were not just, there would be no demand for his Son to suffer and die. And if God were not loving, there would be no willingness for his Son to suffer and die. But God is both just and loving. Therefore his love is willing to meet the demands of his justice.”
That is amazing to think about. God has such a sense of justice that He won’t allow sin to go unpunished. To let sin go unpunished would mean that He let evil run free with no punishment or consequence. His character can not allow that. Even though sin and evil run rampant upon the earth, there will be a day when God will bring all unrepentant sinners to justice.
Romans 6:23 says that the wages of sin is death. All sin will result in the punishment of death (physical and eternal).
Everyone who sins is under a curse. What kind of curse, you may ask? God gave us a standard in His word and He holds us to that standard. Galatians 3:10 says, “For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, “CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT ABIDE BY ALL THINGS WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF THE LAW, TO PERFORM THEM.” (it is written–Deut. 27:26). That means that if we can’t keep God’s commands perfectly…..we are cursed. But Christ took our place as the cursed one. He actually became a curse in God’s eyes when he died on the cross.
But Galatians 3:13 says, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us–for it is written, “CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE”.
The death of Christ became the payment for our sin. 1 John 4:10 says, “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” God loved us so much that He sent Jesus to stand in our place, taking the curse away from us onto himself. This is also referred to as the doctrine of substitution. Because Jesus was the substitute, God’s wrath was not canceled out or withdrawn. It was spent on Jesus while he hung on the cross.
