Jesus Died to Please the Father
The second chapter in John Piper’s book, “Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die”, talks about the fact that Jesus died to please the Father. Yes, he gave his life willingly because of his love for us, but He also submitted to the Father’s desire because of his love for the Father.
Ephesians 5:2 says, “Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Piper states, “Jesus did not wrestle his angry Father to the floor of heaven and take the whip out of his hand. He did not force him to be merciful to humanity. His death was not the begrudging consent of God to be lenient to sinners. No, what Jesus did when he suffered and died was the Father’s idea.”
It was God’s idea to send Jesus to die for us. Yes, God is a God of justice and He will punish sin, but he is a God who loves us and was pleased to send his son so that we might be made right with him.
Isaiah 53:10 says, “But the LORD was pleased to crush Him, putting Him to grief”. God was pleased. That is staggering to think about. Why was God pleased? Because he wanted there to be a way that we could be made right with him, and his justice could be satisfied.
Jesus loved the father and wanted to obey Him. When he was in the garden of Gethsemane He prayed, “Not my will but Thine be done”. He was willing to submit his will to the Father’s will.
I listened to an amazing sermon on this subject by C.J. Mahaney titled, “God as Father: Understanding the Doctrine of Adoption”. I highly recommend this sermon to anyone who would like to better understand the Father’s love for us. The sermon can be found in the 2008 Resolved conference.
