Jesus Died to Achieve His Own Resurrection

We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

I have been going through John Piper’s book, “Fifty Reasons Jesus Came to Die” and have taken on a personal challenge to summarize each chapter so that I will better understand the meaning of the death of Jesus Christ. The fourth reason Piper writes about is that Jesus Died to Achieve his own resurrection from the dead.

John Piper writes, “The death of Christ did not merely precede his resurrection–it was the price that obtained it.” What Jesus accomplished on the cross was brought to light when He rose from the dead. Piper lists five things that resulted from Christ’s death.

1. The wrath of God was satisfied with Christ’s death.

2. The curse against sin was fully absorbed.

3. The obedience of Christ was completed.

4. The price of forgiveness was totally paid.

5. The righteousness of God was totally vindicated.

1 Corinthians 15:17 says, “And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.” In other words, if Jesus had not risen from the dead then his death on the cross did not accomplish saving us from the penalty of sin. The resurrection proves that Jesus is indeed in the Messiah.
