Jesus Died to Show the Love of God

16 September 2009 One Comment

Chapter 5 in John Piper’s book, “Fifty Reasons Jesus Came to Die”, talks about God’s infinite love for us. Piper writes that there are two things that measure God’s love for us. The first is the degree of unworthiness that we had when he saved us.

Romans 5:7-8 says, “For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

We owed a debt that could not be paid. We deserved God’s wrath and punishment, yet He loved us so much that He reached out to us in our unworthiness.

The second thing that measures the love of God is the degree of sacrifice that He made. He gave up His only Son, Jesus to die for us. John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

When we go through difficult times this is a truth that will comfort our hearts as we remember God’s deep love for us. He sacrificed for us and He pulled us up, out of our sin. I am reminded of Psalm 40:1-2, “I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me and heard my cry. He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay–And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.”

God’s love is measured by:
1) His sacrifice of sending his Son, Jesus
2) The degree of unworthiness we had when He saved us
