Jesus Came to Die to Show His Own Love For Us

Jesus loves us and wants us to know him intimately. This was the last thing that was on his mind before he was arrested and taken to be interrogated.

Understanding Our Sin
Chapter 6 of John Piper’s book, “Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die” talks about the love that Jesus Christ had for us that drove him to the cross.   In order to understand Jesus Christ’s love for us personally, we must understand the magnitude of our own personal sin.  Our own sin nailed Jesus to the cross.  When he died on the cross our own personal sins were listed among the weight of sin that he carried.  When he took God’s wrath upon himself he experienced separation from God, which is why he yelled, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”  He bore that burden because he wanted us to one day know the same intimacy that he has with the Father.

Understanding Christ’s Love
John 17 is becoming one of my favorite passages after understanding this great truth.  Jesus prayed to the Father before he was betrayed by Judas, and taken to be interrogated.  In John 17:5 he prays, “And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.”  He experienced glory in the Father’s presence before the world began.  Jesus and the Father experienced a oneness that was intimate.  Jesus said in verse 10, “All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.”

Jesus prayed an amazing thing in verses 20 and 21.  After he prayed for the disciples he prayed for everyone else who would believe.  He prayed, “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”

Jesus asked God to make us one with the Father and one with Jesus and the Father.  Just as Jesus and the Father experience the strength of oneness, Jesus asked that believers would experience that same intimacy with him.  Jesus knew that intimacy with God could not happen if our sin was not paid for.  And that desire was the last thing on his mind before he was taken into custody.

The last thing Jesus prayed in that prayer is found in John 17:26, “I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

Have you experienced that intimacy with God that can only come from believing in Jesus Christ? Have you put your faith in Jesus? If you haven’t, then read the heart of the gospel to find out what Jesus did for you.
