Jesus Came to Die to Become a Ransom for Many

23 September 2009 No Comment

Mark 10:45
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Chapter 8 of John Piper’s book, “Fifty Reasons Jesus Came to Die” says that Jesus came to become a ransom for many. What is a ransom? Dictionary.com says that it is “to redeem from captivity, bondage, detention, etc., by paying a demanded price” or “the sum or price paid or demanded”.

When Christ gave his life as a ransom he paid the demanded price for our sin. Who receives the ransom? God receives it. Jesus knew that God demands justice for sin and he won’t overlook sin. Yet, God wasn’t a cruel task master. God sent Jesus to die for us because of his great love for us.

Jesus laid down his life because he loves us and knew that a price had to be paid for our sin. He said, “No one takes [my life] from me, but I lay it down on my own accord” (John 10:18).

John Piper writes, “How many did Christ effectively ransom from sin? He said that he came ‘to give his life as a ransom for many.’ Yet not everyone will be ransomed from the wrath of God. But the offer is for everyone.”
