Jesus Came to Die to Reconcile Us to God

What is the dispute between us and God? The issue that separates us is our sin. Isaiah 59:2 says, “But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.” A close relationship with God is only possible because Jesus died for our sins.

Jesus Came to Die to Take Away Our Condemnation

Chapter 12 of John Piper’s book, “50 Reasons Jesus Came to Die” talks about how Christ came to take away our condemnation. Piper writes, “The death of Christ secures our freedom from condemnation.” What is condemnation? To condemn means to declare guilty and to declare a sentence of punishment. All of us deserve a sentence of punishment for our sin. But when we put our faith in Jesus God declares us righteous.

Adam sinned causing all after him to have a sin nature, but Jesus was obedient, allowing all who believe in him to be made righteous. To be justified before God means that we are made right before him. Justification is not just having my sins canceled. It is also the imputation of Christ’s righteousness to me.

Chapter 10 of John Piper’s book, “50 Reasons Jesus Came to Die” talks about how Jesus came to Die to provide the basis for our justification. Piper points out that the only way to be justified in any human court is to keep the law. But in God’s courtroom we know we have not kept the law.
