Jesus Came to Die to Take Away Our Condemnation

21 October 2009 No Comment

Romans 8:1–There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Chapter 12 of John Piper’s book, “50 Reasons Jesus Came to Die” talks about how Christ came to take away our condemnation. Piper writes, “The death of Christ secures our freedom from condemnation.” What is condemnation? To condemn means to declare guilty and to declare a sentence of punishment. All of us deserve a sentence of punishment for our sin. But when we put our faith in Jesus God declares us righteous.

But Piper points out that it is not our faith that makes us righteous; it is Christ who makes us righteous. His righteousness becomes our righteousness. Piper writes, “Faith is not the ground of our acceptance with God. Christ alone is. Faith unites us to Christ so that his righteousness is counted as ours.

As I thought about this I was reminded of John 17: 21 which is a prayer that Jesus prayed to the Father. He said, “that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.” And then he says again in verse 26, “and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.” Jesus prayed that we would be one with him and the Father. That oneness happens when we put our faith in him.

What if we receive condemnation from the world? Romans 8:33 says, “Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.” And Romans 8:31 says, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

The world can reject us and hate us but they can not defeat us. Why? Because nothing can separate us from the love of Christ Jesus. If tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, or the sword can’t separate us from his love…..then nothing can (Romans 8:35).
