Jesus Came to Die to Make Us Holy, Blameless, and Perfect
Hebrews 10:14–For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.
Chapter 15 of John Piper’s book, “50 Reasons Jesus Came to Die” talks about how Christ’s sacrifice makes us holy, blameless, and perfect. Sanctification is a process whereby we are becoming more holy. John Piper writes, “The joyful encouragement here is that the evidence of our perfection before God is not our experienced perfection, but our experienced progress. The good news is that being on the way is proof that we have arrived.” In other words, God works in our lives now, continually sanctifying us and he knows the final outcome of our holiness, which is only possible because of his death in the past.
I think of Jude 24 which says, “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy”. God is able to make us stand blameless in his presence one day.
Colossians 1:22 says, “He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach”. He made that sacrifice so that he could present us blameless and holy. Piper writes, “The suffering of Christ secures our perfection so firmly that it is already now a reality.”
