Jesus Came to Die to Obtain For Us All Things That Are Good For Us
Romans 8:32–He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
Chapter 17 of John Piper’s book, “Fifty Reasons Jesus Came to Die” talks about the wonderful truth that God provides everything we need. Piper is quick to point out that everything we need is not the same as having everything we want.
To look at the context of Romans 8:32, it becomes evident that having everything we need does not necessarily mean having a life of comfort and ease. Four verses later verse 36 says, “For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered”. Jesus promised a life of persecution.
Piper reminds us of another similar promise in Philippians 4:19 which says, “My God will supply every need of yours according to the his riches in glory in Christ Jesus”, yet just before Paul tells us that God will supply every need he says in verses 12-13, “In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me”. So need, as defined by the context of both passages does not mean that we will never be hungry, that we will never be persecuted, or that we will never be without.
Piper writes, “What then does it mean that because of Christ’s death for us God will certainly with him graciously give us ‘all things’? It means that he will give us all things that are good for us. All things that we really need in order to be conformed to the image of his Son (Romans 8:29). All things we need to attain everlasting joy.”
Piper points out that God will meet every real need, and he will give us the grace to endure trials, which may include being hungry, going without, and not having things we think we need. But God will give us everything we need to do his will and give him glory. I’m reminded of 2 Corinthians 9:8 which says, “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” God will give us everything we need to serve him.
