Romans 5:12–Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned–

Chapter 18 of John Piper’s book, “50 Reasons Jesus Came to Die” talks about how disease entered the world when sin entered the world. Death and disease were part of God’s judgment on creation. Physical pain parallels the horror of sin. Sin eats away at us just like disease eats away at the body.

Disease and sickness will not always consume us. Romans 8:23 says that we groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies”. One day will receive new bodies and we will be free from sin and death. Revelation 21:4 says, “he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore.” Death will be swallowed up in victory, as 1 Corinthians 15:54 says.

John Piper writes, “The way Christ defeated death and disease was by taking them on himself and carrying them with him to the grave. God’s judgment on the sin that brought disease was endured by Jesus when he suffered and died.”

Isaiah 53:5
“But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
