Galatians 3 states that the law was a tutor to lead us to Christ (Galatians 3:24). The old covenant law points to our sin, while the new covenant points to Christ.

Circumcision was a part of Jewish law and custom, but once the gospel was spread to the Gentiles, some Jews were telling the Gentiles that they had to be circumcised as well in order to be saved. In other words it was the gospel + circumcision, or the gospel + rituals. Paul told them in Galatians 5 that they had “fallen from grace” because they were seeking to be justified by the law.

Jesus Came to Die to Reconcile Us to God

What is the dispute between us and God? The issue that separates us is our sin. Isaiah 59:2 says, “But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.” A close relationship with God is only possible because Jesus died for our sins.

Jesus Came to Die to Take Away Our Condemnation

Chapter 12 of John Piper’s book, “50 Reasons Jesus Came to Die” talks about how Christ came to take away our condemnation. Piper writes, “The death of Christ secures our freedom from condemnation.” What is condemnation? To condemn means to declare guilty and to declare a sentence of punishment. All of us deserve a sentence of punishment for our sin. But when we put our faith in Jesus God declares us righteous.

Adam sinned causing all after him to have a sin nature, but Jesus was obedient, allowing all who believe in him to be made righteous. To be justified before God means that we are made right before him. Justification is not just having my sins canceled. It is also the imputation of Christ’s righteousness to me.

Why did Jesus have to die? Because sin is serious and God is a God of justice. He must punish sin, so he provided a way of escape for us through the death of Jesus.

When Christ gave his life as a ransom he paid the demanded price for our sin. Who receives the ransom? God receives it. Jesus knew that God demands justice for sin and he won’t overlook sin. Yet, God wasn’t a cruel task master. God sent Jesus to die for us because of his great love for us.

What is that certificate of debt that the apostle Paul is talking about in Colossians? The debt he is referring to is our sin. What are the decrees against us? The decrees against us come from the law, which point out our sin. The law shows us where we have failed. It shows us where we are weak. It shows us where we have rebelled against God. And it shows us where we sinned, and never even realized we were sinning.

Jesus Came to Die to Show His Own Love For Us

Jesus asked God to make us one with the Father and one with Jesus and the Father. Just as Jesus and the Father experience the strength of oneness, Jesus asked that believers would experience that same intimacy. Jesus knew that intimacy with God could not happen if our sin was not paid for. And that desire was the last thing on his mind before he was taken into custody.

Romans 5:7-8 says, “For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
