If you have a desire to know and study the bible, you may find that there are many different methods that you can use to study the bible. One easy way to study the bible is to take notes, using the Cornell Note Taking System. First, if you want to study the bible using the Cornell Note Taking System take a piece of paper and fold over ¼ of the paper so that you have a left hand column. You should now have a piece of paper with a left hand column that is about ¼ of the page and a right hand column that takes up ¾ of the page.

For many people, the Christmas season means nothing more than parties, gifts, decorations, and food. But for Christians, Christmas is a reminder of the hope we have in Jesus Christ. Those who know Jesus and have a personal relationship with him have joy despite life’s struggles and hardships.

Christ is our hope. When we go through the disappointments and difficulties of life we find hope when we focus on our attention on Jesus. Christmas should focus our hope on Christ because it reminds us that Christ was born into the world to save us.

Colossians 3:1 says:
Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.

Satan wants to distract us during Christmas so that we don’t focus on the true meaning of Christmas, which is Jesus. It’s easy to get caught up in the party and forget who the party is really for. Imagine if you had a birthday party and everybody showed up for the party, but they all ignored you—and forgot that the party was actually in honor of you. What if they decided that the party was actually for them?

That’s what we tend to do when we celebrate Christmas but forget that Jesus is the one that we should be celebrating. (spending time with family and friends is wonderful, but that isn’t the meaning of Christmas) So how do we focus our attention on the real meaning of Christmas?

Hebrews 12:1 says:
Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.

An encumbrance is something that holds you down or gets in your way. You may be running along and trip on something—that is an encumbrance. A spiritual encumbrance is something that gets in your way of worshiping Jesus. A spiritual encumbrance can be anything that we would rather set our minds on rather than setting our minds on Christ. ( what are you dwelling on the most during Christmas?) Some of the things that we tend to think of are food, presents, relationships, parties are all nice—-but they are not Christmas.

The plain simple truth of Christmas is that Jesus was born into the world to save us.
Luke 2:10-12 says:
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

The key phrase in this verse is “Savior has been born to you”

Luke 19:10 says:
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”

Who are the lost? Everyone who has not been forgiven for their sins is lost. The lost are those who don’t know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Jesus came to us so that he could save us from the penalty of our sin

Romans 6:23 says:
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Our sin brings the penalty of hell—but Jesus was born to save us if we put our hope in him and give him our lives. This year lets focus on minds and hearts on Christ, the true meaning of Christmas.

John 3:16–For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Chapter 19 of John Piper’s book, “50 Reasons Jesus Came to Die” talks about life, death, and eternal life. Piper reminds us that the wish for death comes about only when suffering in life becomes unbearable. We are all wired to want life, and to want happiness in life. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says that God put eternity in man’s heart. There is something in all of us that longs to live forever. And that desire will come true.

Everyone will live for eternity; some will live an eternity in hell while others will live an eternity in heaven. John 3:36 says, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

John 17:3 says, “This is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you sent. Those who know God and who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ will find lasting happiness in the presence of God.

John Piper writes, “We will be changed so that we are capable of dimensions of happiness that were inconceivable to us in this life.” He then states, “For those who trust Christ the best is yet to come. We will see the all-satisfying glory of God.”
I love this beautiful hymn written by Charitie Bancroft. “Before the throne” was originally written in 1863 under the title, “The Advocate”. This hymn does speak of the advocate we have in Christ and it’s one of my favorites. The best part about this hymn is that it is based on scripture.

Before The Throne Of God

Before the throne of God above I have a strong,
a perfect plea A great High Priest whose name is
Love Who ever lives and pleads for me

When Satan tempts me to despair and tells me
of the guilt within Upward I look and see Him there,
Who made an end to all my sin

Because the sinless Savior died my sinful
soul is counted free For God the Just is
satisfied to look on Him and pardon me To look on Him and pardon me

Before the throne of God, I come
Before the throne of God, I come

Behold Him there, the risen Lamb my perfect spotless righteousness
The great unchangeable I Am, the King of glory and of grace

My name is graven on His hands
My name is written on His heart
I know that while in Heaven, He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart

One with Himself I cannot die
My soul is purchased with His blood
My life is hid with Christ on high
With Christ my Savior and my God
With Christ my Savior and my God

I’ve been studying what it means to walk in the spirit. As I sought to have a better understanding of this concept, I looked to two great bible teachers, pastors John Mac Arthur and John Piper.

Walking in the spirit only begins when someone has been born again (John 3:5-8). To be born again means that God changes us on the inside and gives us new life. Ephesians 2:4-5 says, “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.” God made us alive on the inside.

Walk by the Spirit and you won’t fulfill the desires of the flesh
To walk in the spirit means that we are to continually live in the consciousness of his presence and to have our thoughts dominated by Christ.
John Mac Arthur states:
In Galatians, it says “if you walk in the Spirit, you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.” Then there’s an easy conclusion, walking by the Spirit is the same as putting on the Lord Jesus Christ. For years I have said and I say it again and it’s in the little book on the will of God that the Spirit filled life or walking by the Spirit is the very same thing as living a Christ like life. It is the saturation of my life with the person of Christ so that He dominates my thought patterns. So that I live in the consciousness of His presence. That is walking by the Spirit. For the work of the Spirit hasn’t changed one bit from when Jesus said He would send the Spirit. His work is to point to Christ. And walking by the Spirit means that my life is patterned after the Lord Jesus Christ.

How do we walk by the spirit?
We walk by the spirit when we yield our desires to the spirit. The spirit produces desires in us that are according to his will.
John Piper states:
Walking by the Spirit is what we do when the desires produced by the Spirit are stronger than the desires produced by the flesh. This means that “walking by the Spirit” is not something we do in order to get the Spirit’s help, but rather, just as the phrase implies, it is something we do by the enablement of the Spirit.
Piper states again:
The new birth is the coming into our life of the Holy Spirit to create a whole new array of desires and loves and yearnings and longings. And when these desires are stronger than the opposing desires of the flesh, then we are “walking by the Spirit.” For we always act according to our strongest desires.

Ezekiel 36:26-27 says, “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.” Piper points out that when we walk by the spirit we experience the fulfillment of this prophesy.

Walking by the Spirit is similar to being filled with the Spirit
What does it mean to be filled by the Spirit?
Being filled with the spirit involves a moment by moment yielding to the leading of the Spirit.
John Mac Arthur states:
An understanding of the Greek for “be filled,” plerousthe, quite clearly reveals the correct meaning of Paul’s command in Ephesians 5:18. A literal translation of the verb would read something like “be being kept filled.” The idea is one of keeping yourself constantly filled, as you yield moment by moment to the leading of the Spirit. It fits perfectly with the process of walking by the Spirit. He also says this about being filled with the Spirit: “It involves a surrender of your will, your intellect, your body, your time, your talent, your treasure everything to His control, it’s the death of self, it’s the crucifixion of self, it’s the slaying of your own self‑will, it’s the mortification of the members of your body, as it says in Colossians 2.”

How can we practically be filled with the spirit and walk in the spirit?
We are filled with the spirit when we know the mind of Christ. And how do we know the mind of Christ?
Mac Arthur says:
The Apostle Paul says, “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you.” One can be filled with the Spirit only when controlled by the Word. It is knowing truth and obeying it.

When we walk in the spirit we are not subject to legalism
And Mac Arthur states:
But I’ve learned in the new covenant what holiness is and holiness for me is not a list of outside rules. Holiness for me is simply walking by the energy of the indwelling Spirit who empowers me to do the things that I couldn’t force myself to do no matter what the outside rules were.

Piper gives 5 steps towards walking by the spirit
1. Acknowledge that we are unable to do good apart from the enabling work of the Spirit in our lives.
2. Pray that God would allow us to obey him through the power of his Spirit.
3. Trust by faith that since we have come under the power of God’s Spirit, sin will no longer have dominion
over us.
4. Act and do what we know is right. We do this after we have appealed to the Spirit to enable us to obey.
5. Thank God for helping you to obey him.

Romans 5:12–Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned–

Chapter 18 of John Piper’s book, “50 Reasons Jesus Came to Die” talks about how disease entered the world when sin entered the world. Death and disease were part of God’s judgment on creation. Physical pain parallels the horror of sin. Sin eats away at us just like disease eats away at the body.

Disease and sickness will not always consume us. Romans 8:23 says that we groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies”. One day will receive new bodies and we will be free from sin and death. Revelation 21:4 says, “he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore.” Death will be swallowed up in victory, as 1 Corinthians 15:54 says.

John Piper writes, “The way Christ defeated death and disease was by taking them on himself and carrying them with him to the grave. God’s judgment on the sin that brought disease was endured by Jesus when he suffered and died.”

Isaiah 53:5
“But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

Hebrews 9:14- how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Chapter 16 of John Piper’s book, “50 Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die” talks about the fact that the death of Christ gives us a clear conscience.

John Piper writes, “So here we are in the modern age–the age of science, internet, organ transplants, instant messaging, cell phones–and our problem is fundamentally the same as always: Our conscience condemns us. We don’t feel good enough to come to God. An no matter how distorted our consciences are, this much is true: We are not good enough to come to him.”

That is why Jesus came to reconcile us to God. He bridged the gap. His sacrifice made us holy and blameless before God. And that is only made possible through the death of Christ.

Piper points out that we feel defiled by our sin because the stain of sin remains no matter what things we do to try to try to alleviate our guilt. We may serve in a soup kitchen, try to do good things, give money to a good cause, etc. but the conscience will continue to incite guilt.

The only answer is the blood of Christ. The blood of Christ cleanses us, as Hebrews 9:14 says. This reminds me of 1 Peter 1:18,19, “knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.”

The only way to be cleansed from a guilty coscience is to turn to Christ for salvation. If you haven’t done that then read the Path of Salvation.
